Every crime scene tells a story. Forensic science is how we read, test, and present that story in a court of law.

This free course is a complete, beginner-friendly introduction to forensic science. You’ll build the foundation every specialised branch of the field rests on: what forensic science is, how it developed, the principles that make evidence trustworthy, how evidence is classified, and why it matters. There is no lab work, no science degree needed, and no jargon-heavy lecturing. Every idea is explained in plain language with real names, dates, and examples.

What you’ll cover

• Definition, Scope & Objectives: where the word “forensic” comes from, how the field serves both criminal and civil law, the sciences it draws on, and the six objectives behind a forensic expert’s work.

• History of Forensic Science: from the first document-examination treatise and the fingerprint breakthroughs of the 1800s, to the first police crime laboratory, DNA fingerprinting, and modern DNA databases, plus the key milestones of forensic science in India.

• The Seven Foundational Principles: Individuality, Exchange, Probability, Progressive Change, Comparison, Analysis, and Circumstantial Facts, and how each one is applied in real investigations.

• Types of Evidence: Categories, organised into five groupings (source, form, certainty, uniqueness, and specialised), so you can classify any piece of evidence with confidence.

• Importance of Evidence: why evidence is the foundation of every investigation, from identifying suspects to preventing wrongful convictions.

Why this course is different
Instead of memorising disconnected terms, you’ll see how the ideas fit together. Locard’s Exchange Principle explains why trace evidence exists. The Principle of Comparison explains why a fingerprint is only ever compared with another fingerprint. The Principle of Probability explains why experts word their conclusions so carefully in court.

About this course
This is Module 1 of a longer forensic science training program, offered free so you can experience the teaching style before going deeper. It is fully self-contained: you don’t need anything else to understand and use what’s taught here.

Taught by Aditya Kumar. Enrol now and start with the question every investigator asks first: what can the evidence tell us?
